Jim Cheatham was stationed across the country when he learned his grandmother's health began to decline quickly. His mom, Beth Cheatham, initiated an emergency messaged through the Hero Care Network. Within 24 hours, Jim was on his way to say goodbye to his grandmother. "It became very obvious that she was not going to make it to the end of the year," said Beth Cheatham, Jim's mom. When a service member or their family member initiates an emergency message, we work with the family and appropriate professions, such as doctors and nurses, to verify the emergency. Emergencies can include an illness, injury or death of an immediate family member, as well as a birth message. Once all of the information is verified, it's sent to the service member's commanding officer to make an informed decision regarding emergency leave.
