Starting this weekend, Seollal — Korea’s biggest holiday — is officially here! It’s a time when people head back to their hometowns to spend quality time with family, but it’s also when everyone braces themselves for the infamous holiday traffic 😮‍💨 These days, even 7–9 hours driving from Seoul to Busan feels exhausting. But 30–40 years ago? Holiday travel could take up to 16 hours. There were fewer cars back then, but the roads and infrastructure weren’t nearly as developed. Bus terminals and train stations were just as packed as the highways. Still, despite the long and exhausting journey, people were filled with excitement about going home. It wasn’t unusual to see families step out of their cars on the highway, laughing, chatting, and somehow finding joy in the middle of all that congestion.
