Chancellor Kent Syverud, who has served as Syracuse University's chancellor and president for 12 years, announced his upcoming departure Tuesday. The announcement drew mixed reactions from the wider Syracuse community.
Some students said the decision may be tied to backlash over his handling of Trump-era higher education policies. In April, Syverud was criticized for not signing an open letter condemning Trump’s “government overreach" in higher education. This summer, SU closed its Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
Under Syverud’s leadership, the university established InclusiveU and the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs. University leaders and central New York lawmakers commended his legacy.
