Syracuse hasn’t elected a Republican for mayor since the late 1990s. In the 21st century, current independent Mayor Ben Walsh is the only non-Democrat to be elected to the job. His deputy mayor, Democrat and Working Families Party candidate Sharon Owens, is on the ballot to take his place.
Her fundraising dwarfs her opponents’ — and Syracuse’s 39,000 registered Democrats exceed the 21,000 voters not enrolled in a party and the 13% of residents registered Republicans.
To win City Hall on Nov. 4, Owens will have to beat her three opponents: one Republican, two independents. All three say the city is moving in the wrong direction, and their hypothetical administrations could turn it around. Swipe to learn about them.
