When Mayor-elect Sharon Owens assumes office next month, she will be met with the opportunity to shape Syracuse’s future — and inherit a host of issues affecting the city. On the campaign trail, Owens committed to policies such as the Thriving Neighborhoods project and public safety initiatives.
Micron Technology’s $100 billion investment to build a facility near Syracuse and the city’s $180 million in state and federal funding for the reconstruction efforts for I-81 are among Owens’ new responsibilities.
“Syracuse is on the precipice of a potentially new era,” said Grant Reeher, a Syracuse University political science professor. “In 15 years, (Syracuse) might look completely different and feel completely different than it does now. And so I think there’s a lot of opportunity there.”
