After years of delays and regulatory hurdles, Micron Technology broke ground on its Clay semiconductor manufacturing facility Friday. Officials say the plant will transform the region’s economy and establish a hub for advanced chip production. Micron announced its New York investment after the CHIPS and Science Act passed back in 2022.
Officials at White Pine Commerce Park said the investment is one of the largest private manufacturing investments in U.S. history and is expected to create 9,000 direct jobs and tens of thousands of indirect jobs over the next two decades. The Clay facility is part of Micron’s broader plan to invest $200 billion in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing.
Those in attendance Friday included Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Gov. Kathy Hochul, Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. John Mannion, Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon and Mayor Sharon Owens.
