Team USA stays on top! 🎉
U.S. figure skating took home the gold medal in the figure skating team event for the second Olympics in a row on Sunday.
Team USA finished with a total score of 69 points, edging out Japan by just one point to secure the win. Italy took bronze with 60 points. 🏅
Strong performances from early events set Team USA up with a five-point lead after two days of skating — but Japan fought back hard Sunday night. World champs Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara crushed the pairs free skate, and Kaori Sakamoto owned the women’s free skate, wiping out the lead and setting up an all-or-nothing men’s free skate.
Then came “Quad God” Ilia Malinin. The teenage phenom landed five quadruple jumps and scored a jaw-dropping 200.03 points, topping Japan’s Shun Sato and sealing the gold for Team USA. 🔥
What a finish! 👏
