Hand pull (or pulling the hands) is an advanced defensive technique used by blockers to counter a hitter's attempt to "tool" the block (hitting the ball off the blocker's hands and out of bounds).
Purpose and Technique:
Avoiding the "Tool": When a hitter intentionally aims for a blocker's fingertips to deflect the ball out of bounds, the blocker can "pull" their hands back or down at the last millisecond. This causes the ball to miss their hands entirely and fly out of bounds, resulting in a point for the blocking team.
Reading the Attacker: Effective "pull" plays require the blocker to read the hitter’s body language, specifically looking for a "swipe" or "throw" motion where the attacker goes up with a straight arm aiming wide.
Strategic Choice: This is a risky move; if the blocker pulls their hands and the hitter decides to spike straight down instead, the blocker has removed their defense, leaving the court open.
