15-year-old Zanessa (“Nessa”) is a fighter. Shortly after noticing a sore in her throat, Nessa and her family received a hard diagnosis: cancer. It turned out Nessa had a rare type of tissue cancer in her throat: rhabdomyosarcoma. Days of being a normal teenager quickly changed and her family began a whirlwind of trips back and forth across the state: from their hometown of Alliance to Children’s in Omaha—a 7-hour trip.
Our pediatric oncology team wasted no time—Nessa quickly underwent two separate surgeries to remove the tumor, then began chemotherapy. Now, Nessa is facing another 10 months of chemotherapy and radiation treatment at Children’s. On their way back west after a recent treatment, the family’s vehicle caught fire along 1-80, leaving them without adequate transportation.
