When we talk about salt, we usually think in pounds.
At the Port of New York and New Jersey, salt is measured in thousands of tons, sometimes for a single winter storm. Much of it travels from warm-weather places like South America, moving from summer climates to freezing conditions in just a few weeks.
Once ships arrive, salt is unloaded, stored along the waterfront, and dispatched by truck as orders come in, often around the clock, to help communities prepare for and respond to winter weather.
That work is carried out by Morton Salt, Prieto Enterprises, and Atlantic Salt, coordinating shipments, managing storage, and moving salt where it’s needed most. This video was filmed at Atlantic Salt, where that process plays out in real time.
