In 18 years as head basketball coach at St. Augustine High School, Bernard Griffith built one of the most successful programs in the New Orleans area, winning one national championship (ESPN, 1995) and three Louisiana High School Athletic Association state titles (1992, 1995, 1999). Griffith led the Purple Knights to 13 Catholic League championships, including 11 consecutive titles, and guided his teams to the state final four in nine of his 18 seasons. From 1987 to 2005, he compiled a 491-127 record, a .794 winning percentage. Known as “Coach Griff,” he coached standouts Torrey Andrews (Rice), Pointer Williams (Tulane), Hollis Price (Oklahoma), and Kerry Kittles (Villanova).
