In 1995, LaRee Pearl Sugg become just the third African American woman ever to compete on the LPGA Tour, following in the footsteps of Althea Gibson and Renee Powell. She competed in Massachusetts twice during her rookie season, including the inaugural Friendy's Classic at Crestview Country Club (Agawam, MA), where she shot 69 in qualifying without even having a practice round. Before competing in the PING/Welch's Championship later that summer , she she spent time at Franklin Park’s William J. Devine Golf Course to host a clinic, mirroring a visit made by a young Tiger Woods just three years earlier. As an amateur, she competed in the 1987 U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur at The Orchards, nearly toppling eventual champion Michelle McGann in the second round of match play. She went on to earn a scholarship to UCLA, making the clinching putt to win the NCAA Championship for UCLA.
