Meet the historic Jews of North Africa Did you know an island in North Africa is home to one of the world’s oldest synagogues? Local legend says that after the fall of Solomon’s Temple in 586 BCE, priests fled here carrying a single sacred stone believed to be built into this foundation. Known as El Ghriba synagogue, or “The Miraculous”, the design is a stunning Mediterranean blend located on the island of Djerba in Tunisia. While Tunisia’s Jewish population once numbered over 100,000, Djerba remains one of the last active Jewish communities in the region, with an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 people still living here. Every year, the island comes alive during what’s called the Lag B’Omer pilgrimage. Thousands return to place handwritten petitions in a sacred cave and parade a decorated menorah through the streets.
