British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe — one of Britain’s most successful businessmen, founder of chemicals giant INEOS and owner of nearly a third of Manchester United — has drawn backlash after saying the UK had been “colonised by immigrants” in a TV interview, linking migration and welfare levels to economic strain.
Sky News said Ratcliffe cited incorrect figures, claiming the UK population rose from 58 million to 70 million since 2020, while the Office for National Statistics estimates it was 67 million in mid-2020 and 69 million in mid-2024.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the remarks “wrong” and divisive, and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham urged him to withdraw them, as critics — including Manchester United fan groups — also questioned his intervention in UK politics from Monaco.
