Percussion is a language. And growing up Yoruba, I learned early that sound carries meaning. Yoruba is a tonal language. The rise and fall of a phrase changes everything. So before I ever thought about rhythm as “music,” I felt it as communication. The drum spoke the same way. Through inflection. Through contour. Through intention. Not simply playing fast or loud - but saying something clearly. That way of listening has stayed with me. It shapes how I play, how I teach, how I hear music.
