Italy you might think…but you’d be wrong.
The construction of the aqueducts in Istanbul, which were part of the water supply system of the ancient city of Constantinople, took place during the reign of the Roman Emperor Valens in the 4th century AD. Valens was the younger brother of Emperor Valentinian I and ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from 364 until his death in 378. The aqueducts were constructed to bring water to the city from the Belgrade Forest, about 19 kilometers away, and were used to supply water for centuries. Over time, the aqueducts fell into disrepair and many of them were damaged or destroyed, but some sections still remain today as a testament to the impressive engineering skills of the ancient Romans.
