Brian Petersohn’s father, LeRoy Petersohn, was an American medic during World War II. He was a member of the unit that stumbled upon Mauthausen, a Nazi concentration camp west of Vienna, where more than 95,000 prisoners died. Petersohn’s job was to triage which inmates could be helped. Some inmates died right in front of him. Outside one of the barracks, a woman who had been a prisoner handed him her newborn baby. The baby’s skin was badly infected. “This one we have to try to save,” Brian Petersohn recalls his dad saying.
