In the spring of 1945, Hana Berger-Moran’s mother, Priska, was a slave laborer in a German factory. She managed to hide her pregnancy from her Nazi captors until she went into labor on the factory floor. “[She was] on a plank that was put across a table. And the guards watched. And they took bets on whether it was going to be a boy or a girl,” says author Wendy Holden. Berger-Moran says her mother later described her birth as “like a show.” “I said, ‘Mom, were you embarrassed?’ ‘I didn't have a chance to be embarrassed. You were being born.
