Mizzou has recently made several changes to improve safety on campus, including a cosmetic update to the emergency blue light phone system and an expansion of campus lighting. Ellis Library has also begun closing its upper floors during overnight hours to reallocate funding toward library amenities. In 2024, investigative reporters at The Maneater found that, on average, 11% of the emergency phones were completely or partially inoperative. From January to November of 2025, data indicate that this number rose to 22.3%. “You're going to have some that just go out of service every now and then,” said Nicholas Tietsort, Mizzou Deputy Spokesperson for Public Safety. “They get to them pretty quickly in making sure that they're back up and running.
