This is not your usual bar karaoke. This weekly community sing-along brings people together and uplifts morale. The group sings and learns Irish folk work songs called sea shanties, originally meant to help sailors stay productive. Though they're miles away from the sea, this inland community of Midwesterners keeps the maritime music tradition going at a local pub. On Thursday nights at Morrison’s Irish Pub—AKA “your Ireland away from Ireland”—in Alton, Illinois, patrons clink Guinness glasses over beef stew and mashed potatoes, and sing shanties.
