The future of Greenland was high on the agenda at the 2026 Munich Security Conference. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she believes U.S. President Donald Trump still desires to own the island, despite stepping back from earlier suggestions the U.S. could seize it by force. Earlier this year, Trump's remarks about a potential U.S. takeover of Greenland triggered protests in the Arctic island and Denmark, and raised concerns among European allies. While Trump has since ruled out using force or tariffs, he continues to argue Greenland is vital to U.S. national security.
