🥇 Throwback Thursday to when Minneapolis Parks played a significant role in Olympic history! Several Minneapolis parks served as host sites for Winter Olympic trials and high-level national competitions throughout the early and mid-20th century. Powderhorn Park hosted speed skating trials connected to the 1936, 1940, and 1948 Winter Olympics. Although the 1940 Games were ultimately canceled due to World War II, the trials were still held in Minneapolis. Minneapolis also hosted speed skating trials for the 1964 Winter Olympics, which were initially held at Lake Harriet before moving to Lake Nokomis, where high winds created challenging conditions for athletes. In addition to speed skating, Glenwood Park, now known as Theodore Regional Wirth Park, hosted the 1924 U.S. Winter Olympic ski jumping trials.
