Eighty-one years ago today, U.S. forces began the assault on Iwo Jima. For 36 days, Sailors and Marines fought with extraordinary courage to seize this small volcanic island that proved vital to ending the war in the Pacific. During the battle, the U.S. Navy delivered the sustained firepower, sea control, logistics, and lifesaving medical support. From the massive pre-invasion naval bombardment to carrier-based air strikes, to the continuous flow of amphibious ships bringing reinforcements and supplies, Navy Sailors were essential to one of the most hard-fought battles in our nation’s history. Today we honor the service and sacrifice of those who served on Iwo Jima and the legacy they passed to every Sailor who has stood the watch since.
