Lana Del Rey just released a new single "White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter," and the haunting intro may sound familiar to any jazz fans. ⁠ ⁠ The song pulls from Ella Fitzgerald's 1964 rendition of the jazz standard "Laura." In 1944, David Raskin wrote the song for the film noir 'Laura' after receiving a Dear John letter from his wife. The song became so popular, Raskin had lyricist Johnny Mercer write lyrics for the song and officially titled the track after the movie. ⁠ ⁠ Similar to the song it's sampled in "Laura" holds an unsettling quality with lyrics to match: ⁠ ⁠ "Laura is the face in the misty light, footsteps that you hear down the hall,⁠ The laugh that floats on the summer night that you can never quite recall"⁠ ⁠ The "Laura" in the film also served as one of the inspirations for David Lynch's character Laura Palmer from 'Twin Peaks.'
