In Focus: Shaqúelle Whyte, ‘In the shubz’, 2025 at White Cube Hong Kong The large-scale work, ‘In the shubz’ (2025), stages an open-casket scene in an eerily pallid room. The painting’s imagery may be read in relation to the public visitations of the civil rights era, in which open casket viewings became acts of protest and collective witness. Shaqúelle also alludes to the premature death of his grandfather the year before he was born. The artist notes it would be ‘disingenuous to picture him’, adopting an ethical position that acknowledges the limits of representation. 🔗 Click the link in our bio to learn more about the exhibition. 📍‘Shaqúelle Whyte: Nine nights; Strange fruit’ is on view at White Cube Hong Kong until 14 March 2026. Images: Shaqúelle Whyte, ‘In the shubz’, 2025. © the artist.
