This week for our #BlackFilmmakersInFocus series, we’re excited to spotlight Titus Kaphar, writer and director of EXHIBITING FORGIVENESS, awarded Best New Directors Feature at #NashFilm55. Titus Kaphar is an artist whose paintings, sculptures, and installations examine the history of representation by transforming traditional styles and mediums. Through formal innovation, his work emphasizes the physicality and dimensionality of the canvas and materials themselves, seeking to dislodge history from its status as the “past” and reveal its contemporary relevance. Kaphar approaches filmmaking as an extension of his studio practice, expanding existing bodies of painting and sculpture through film. His semi-autobiographical feature film debut, EXHIBITING FORGIVENESS, follows a Black artist whose path to success is disrupted by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, with Kaphar’s own paintings featured throughout the film.
