SB99, sponsored by Sen. Keith Kelley, R-Anniston, would require schools to display the Ten Commandments alongside quotes framing them as central to U.S. history and law. The bill claims many Alabama teachers won’t teach these “historical truths” because they misunderstand the Establishment Clause for religious freedoms in the Constitution, or they let personal preferences guide them. Kelley said “great care” was taken not to violate the U.S. Constitution’s Establishment Clause. Kelley also said the Ten Commandments is “not a religious document.” The commandments would be displayed on posters at least 11 inches by 14 inches in classrooms for grades five through 12 where American history is taught, or in other common school areas. The poster would display quotations from the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, among others.
