💪We’re taking a moment ahead of the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games in March to celebrate some historic milestones in the disability community. Canine Companions created the concept of the modern #servicedog 50 year ago in 1975. 🐕‍🦺 Less than one year later, the first Winter Paralympic games were held in Sweden. The word “Paralympic” derives from the Greek preposition “para” (beside or alongside) and the word “Olympic”. Its meaning is that Paralympics are the parallel Games to the Olympics and illustrates how the two movements exist side-by-side. In the first paralympics, athletes competed in alpine and cross-country skiing. Now, 50 years later, it's been expanded to include 16 sports, opening doors for more people with disabilities to compete.
