Weighing in at up to 2,200 pounds and reaching lengths of up to 11 feet, Steller sea lions are the largest member of the family Otariidae, the “eared seals.” They're also one of the species threatened by the Trump administration's latest push to open more than 100 million acres off the coast of Alaska to seabed mining. As you can imagine, seafloor mining is highly destructive. Here's why: It scrapes the ocean floor for metals and minerals, creating huge sediment plumes that spread over large distances, smothering ecosystems and releasing heavy metals into the water — and could hurt endangered species like Steller sea lions and more.
