It's been four years since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, having already controlled Crimea after annexing it in 2014. At first, Russia advanced quickly, taking land in the North, South and East of the country. By the end of the first year of war, Ukraine regained some territory. Since then, the front lines have remained entrenched and largely unchanged. In November, a US-backed peace plan suggested Ukraine could give up much of the Donbas, and withdraw from parts of Donetsk they still hold, but for now, the fighting is continuing.
