There are trillions of connections in this part of the brain, shown here as lines criss-crossing throughout. These connections underlie our everyday functions and tasks—from language to consciousness and decision-making.
Neurosurgeon Jakob Strähle captured this video as part of his collaborative work to build a new tool to guide brain tumor surgery and improve the outcome for their patients. It uses an imaging technique called stimulated Raman scattering microscopy, which can create detailed images like this that map how a tissue is structured and organized. This detailed map can help surgeons navigate operations and further our understanding of how neurons connect and how different molecules are distributed throughout the brain.
Oh, and the answer to the quiz? This is the neocortex! It’s the layered structure where many of the traits that differentiate humans are processed.
