Earl Sweatshirt (AKA Thebe Neruda Kgositsile) has ventured on a path through the music industry that is uniquely his own. He first started releasing music on MySpace under the name Sly Tendencies, but was quickly discovered by Tyler, The Creator – which led to him coming up with the name Earl Sweatshirt and to joining Odd Future. After releasing his debut mixtape ‘Earl’ that was produced largely by Tyler himself, Thebe was sent to a boarding school in Samoa by his mom because him and his friends kept getting into trouble. (If you ever hear someone say “Free Earl,” this is what they’re referring to btw) During this time he studied books like Malcolm X’s biography, and wrote raps for songs including Odd Future’s ‘Oldie’ – only to be brought back to the states by Tupac’s first manager (Leila Steinberg) who actually still manages him today.
