Glow-in-the-dark succulents are now a real thing. 🌿✨ (at least they are now...)
Researchers have created houseplants that recharge in sunlight and emit a soft glow after dark — without genetic modification. Instead, they injected “after-glow” phosphor particles (the same material used in glow-in-the-dark toys) directly into the leaves.
Succulents turned out to be ideal hosts. Their dense leaf structure distributes the particles evenly, allowing the plant to absorb a few minutes of sunlight or LED exposure and glow for up to two hours.
It’s not bioluminescence in the firefly sense. It’s materials science meeting plant anatomy.
Questions remain about long-term durability and safety, but the implications are intriguing — low-energy lighting for interiors, garden paths, or public landscapes.
“I just find it incredible that an entirely human-made micro-scale material can come together so seamlessly with the natural structure of a plant,” says research lead Shuting Liu.
