Russia and Ukraine carried out another exchange of soldiers’ bodies on Thursday under agreements reached during talks in Istanbul last year.
Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky said the bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers were handed over to Ukraine, while 35 Russian soldiers’ bodies were returned to Russia.
Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Handling of Prisoners of War confirmed the repatriation of 1,000 bodies. Authorities said investigators and forensic experts will now work to identify the remains.
The exchange comes as Ukraine’s chief negotiator meets envoys of US President Donald Trump in Geneva for a new round of talks aimed at ending the conflict, now in its fifth year.
Kyiv and Moscow regularly publish estimates of the other side’s losses but rarely provide full details of their own.
