Confusion surrounds Britain’s controversial deal to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago - including an island with the strategically important U.S.-UK air base Diego Garcia - to Mauritius after a UK minister’s remarks to the UK parliament.
Speaking on Wednesday foreign office minister Hamish Falconer told lawmakers the process of ratifying the deal in the British parliament had been paused and that there were talks with the United States.
A UK government source insisted afterwards that Britain has not paused the ratification process for a deal.
US President Donald Trump has recently repeatedly urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to scrap the deal, despite earlier expressing support for the treaty.
