I just finished 7 months working 6 days/week on inpatient psychiatry. Common diagnoses I’ve treated include schizophrenia, substance-induced psychosis, bipolar mania and depression, suicide attempts and ideation, severe depression and/or anxiety, PTSD, and severe personality disorders, mixed with some meth, opioid, cocaine, alcohol and cannabis use disorders. This job comes with a level of responsibility I’m honestly still getting comfortable with: I’ve held family meetings for new diagnoses of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, I’ve gone to court countless times as an expert witness to involuntarily commit and medicate patients (which I do not take lightly), I’ve stayed late advocating to discharge patients when I felt the hospitalization was causing more harm than good, I’ve sat and held space for patients who have experienced unfathomable trauma.
