I’ll be the first to recognize my privilege in this space. Yes I worked my ass off in my pre-med classes to maintain a high GPA in undergrad and went above and beyond seeking out clinical, research & volunteer experiences, but I would not have been able to engage in these unpaid activities that boosted my application had I needed to support myself or my family financially. Most students don’t have the option to take an entire summer off of working to study for the MCAT like I did and this is not lost on me. Increasing the diversity of practicing doctors is what we need to take the best care of our diverse patient populations so something needs to change! . One of my hopes with creating this account was to create a low barrier way for anyone to access information about medical school and gain insight into what a career in medicine entails regardless of if they have a family member in medicine that knows how this whole process works.
