Following incidents of violence in downtown Columbia during the Fall semester, UM System President Mun Choi issued a call to action to address what he described as a “crisis point” in crime. Columbia leaders met with Choi to discuss measures to improve safety in the city, including increasing police presence downtown by having the University of Missouri Police Department provide the Columbia Police Department with additional patrol support where necessary. MUPD Chief Brian Weimer urged students to stay informed and to take advantage of the department’s resources. He explains that nuances in analyzing crime statistics influence whether the city's crime rates are actually increasing. “So always refer to official sources or reach out to us and ask questions so we can tell you exactly what actually is going on versus the misinformation that's directed out there all the time,” Weimer said.
