Kathleen Collins was a prolific civil rights activist and filmmaker in the 1970s. She walked so I could run. And like me, she believed in creating complicated, demythologized portraits of Black people to push against the ever-present limiting depictions of our humanity. She most famously did so with her debut feature film, LOSING GROUND (1982). And now…more than 30 years later, her granddaughter, a young woman who I cherish, Ruby Rose Collins, is making a film about the complicated artist and mother that Kathleen was, ALL THE LOVE I COULD HANDLE.
