Imagine sharper images without bigger or more expensive microscopes. UC Berkeley’s Amit Kohli is using AI to correct blurring across the entire microscope field of view using just one calibration image. Traditionally, this takes hundreds of measurements and hours of computation. This image visually explains why his work is so powerful: it shows Point Spread Functions (PSFs), which are distorted light points illustrating how image quality can vary across an optical system’s view due to imperfections. His method, Ring Deconvolution Microscopy, promises to simplify and accelerate microscope design by prioritizing smart software over complex hardware. It’s also incredibly versatile, applicable to miniature scopes, fluorescence imaging, and endoscopy—and it’s open source! #microscopy #science #AI
