Electrical spikes in neurons are extremely fast – typically just a few thousandths of a second long! Researcher Adam Cohen is mapping the electrical impulses of neurons by developing new imaging technology to capture their movement across the full three-dimensional structure of these tiny cells 🤯 This lightning-like structure is actually a collection of very thin membrane tubes that make up a brain cell (aka neuron). The first image shows a blue laser targeted to the cell. The light gets converted into an electrical stimulus. The second is a colored map showing the delay of electricity throughout.
