This lightning-like structure is actually a collection of very thin membrane tubes that make up a brain cell (aka neuron). The first image shows a blue laser targeted to the cell. The light gets converted into an electrical stimulus. The second is a colored map showing the delay of electricity throughout. If scientists like Adam are able to see how our neurons fire, they will be closer to understanding the complexity of the human brain and developing new approaches to treating neurological and psychiatric conditions.
