While these 3D images have extraordinary detail, they are noisy and low contrast, meaning it can take months to figure out what you’re looking at. Our Imaging Institute challenged AI/ML developers to create algorithms to address this challenge — and they DELIVERED!
The bottleneck their new algorithms will help solve can save months of manual labor for scientists using the advanced imaging technique called cryoET. This technique can image the biology within intact cells at sub-nanometre resolution — that’s on a scale that’s so small, it’s about the size of cutting a grain of salt into 100,000 pieces!
This can help shave months off analysis for researchers, and opens up a whole new set of questions that we can start to answer about how our cells work.
