What happens when important parts of your cells interact? 🤔 Mitochondria, the famous powerhouse of the cell (in green), are responsible for energy production and lysosomes (in red) help break down waste. This complex interplay affects how our cells function, and understanding it may be the key to treating various diseases.
Researchers David Shackelford, Roberto Zoncu and Rushika Perera are developing ways to track these interactions and see if any chemical substances are being exchanged between the lysosomes and mitochondria. To do this, they’re using different methods such as powerful microscopes to see the cells up close, mass spectrometry to identify the substances involved, and biochemical methods to recreate these interactions in the lab.
