Otis Washington is recognized as one of the greatest high school football coaches in Louisiana history. In 11 seasons at St. Augustine High School from 1969 to 1979, he compiled a 113-17-1 record with three state championships in 1975, 1978, and 1979 in the state’s highest classification. Washington posted a winning record in all 11 seasons, earned seven Catholic League titles, and sent more than 120 players to the college ranks. A native of Selma, Alabama, Washington came to New Orleans on a football scholarship to Xavier University. He captained Xavier’s final intercollegiate football team in 1959, earned All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors as an offensive guard and linebacker, and also received all-conference recognition in baseball.
