Reports and investigations over the years have documented spoiled food, lack of access to adequate healthcare, overcrowding, and prolonged detention of asylum seekers who have committed no crime. The woman we are supporting lived that reality. She fled political instability. She fled abuse in her home country. Instead of safety, she was detained. Inside the facility, food was spoiled. On more than one occasion, her meals contained maggots. She became physically ill and was denied proper medical treatment.
