On International Polar Bear Day, this Copernicus Sentinel-3 image highlights part of the frozen Hudson Bay along the northern coast of #Ontario, Canada (captured 23 February). 🐻‍❄️ #HudsonBay - the world’s second-largest bay - freezes each winter, creating a critical hunting platform for polar bears. In and around Polar Bear Provincial Park (seen here in the middle of the image sticking out across the bay), up to 200 polar bears rely on this seasonal sea ice to hunt seals and build the fat reserves they need to survive. But in a rapidly warming Arctic, sea ice is forming later and melting earlier. This shortens the hunting season and forces bears onto land for longer periods, reducing body condition and threatening cub survival. 🧊 #InternationalPolarBearDay
