March 1st is Korea’s national holiday known as Sam-il Jeol. On March 1, 1919, people all across the country took to the streets during Japanese colonial rule and declared Korea’s independence. It was a massive, nationwide movement where ordinary citizens stood up against the Japanese Empire. Even though independence didn’t come right away, it showed Korea’s refusal to submit and became a powerful symbol of non-violent resistance. It also sparked future independence efforts — and even influenced anti-imperial movements across East Asia.
