When we think about endangered species, we often think of the big, fuzzy ones. Let us introduce you to a little creature that deserves our love too. Fish Lake Valley tui chubs are rare fish found in only two places in Nevada: one remaining spring in their native range and a pond where they were introduced. All but one of the half-dozen springs where they evolved has dried up, after decades of alfalfa growing and other agriculture drained their aquifers. If the current rate of water use goes on, scientists believe these little, olive-colored fish could go extinct. And the loss wouldn't stop there. Fish Lake Valley tui chubs are an important part of the biodiversity that makes U.S. deserts unique and precious.
