For the past few years, I’ve shot in some pretty cold conditions from subarctic Churchill, to -21C weather at Waterfowl Lakes. However, I have never experienced something like the morning when I got this photo. Right as I got out of my car near Castle Mountain, I felt the freezing -31°C temperature going through my 5 layers of cloths. As time went on, everything around us started to freeze. My camera’s LCD screen stopped working from the cold, and my face was wrapped in thin ice from my warm breath freezing right away. This was the first time ever that cold felt like pain in my hands and toes. But this morning was also one of the most moody sunrises I’ve ever seen. A low fog was hovering over the river and everything around me was a nice blue tone.
