Should schools be held accountable for shootings? Buck Myre, whose son was killed in a school shooting, believes they should. The gunman who killed Myre’s son was sent to a counselor’s office a few hours before the attack. His parents were called in, the meeting lasted just 12 minutes, and his backpack was never checked. Inside was a handgun and a journal detailing his plan to shoot his classmates. “The kid was in a counseling office. He was obviously in crisis. He basically already had a gun in his hand. And the counseling office fumbled it,” says Myre. Claims against the school and staff were dismissed because in Michigan, immunity laws protect public entities, including schools, and their employees from being sued. Myre fears “immunity is driving inaction.” #schoolsafety #oxfordmichigan #schoolshooting #schools
